Pride and Prejudice(last half)

“From the very beginning—from the first moment, I may almost say—of my acquaintance with you, your manners, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form the groundwork of disapprobation on which succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry.”
This quote demonstrates a very angry but strong tone shown by Elizabeth about how she views Mr. Darcy. I very much like this quote as it shows a domineering side of Elizabeth to stand up for what she believes to Mr. Darcy. She is able to express her feelings very well about how she felt from the very start that he did not treat her with respect and only ever demonstrated arrogance in her presence. From Elizabeth's point of view, she expresses her feelings that she deserves better and would never marry someone who did not truly care for her and was extremely selfish. However, after finishing the novel and looking back at this quote in hindsight, it is shocking to see how Mr. Darcy began to express that he was a good person and Elizabeth was able to realize she truly did love and deserve a man like him. Elizabeth's characterization was that she was a woman who wanted to find love and not be married off to someone with money. However, Elizabeth was a down to earth, honest, and strong woman who readers may have seen to not accept anyone less than who she deserves. Therefore this quote strengthens Elizabeth's characterization that she will stand up for what she desires.
Your blog depicts Elizabeth so on precisely, and I think how hard it must have been for women in that time period to have the strength and character, such as Elizabeth has to speak their mind. I am not sure if it was Elizabeth who judged Mr. Darcy too harshly at first, or it was Mr. Darcy who actually changed but probably a combination of the two, as they bought had a greater connection and finally were able to express their true love for each other.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth standing up for herself in the quote you selected from the text is a moment in the story that represents who Elizabeth is as a person. Throughout the story, she judges others for marrying for status, especially to men who are fools, as Elizabeth describes them. I also like this point in the story because a woman is telling a man how he made her feel with no shame. Women standing up for themselves may seem normal to us. Women's opinions often did not matter during this time. Women kept their mouths shut to maintain a positive relationship with their husbands.
