In an Artist's Studio

Word count: 254 " Not as she is, but was when hope shone bright; Not as she is, but as she fills his dream." In this quote, we recognize that the man is the artist that is painting a beautiful woman. However, he views and paints her in a more beautiful manner that does not reflect how she is then but how she was when she was hopeful and how he saw her in his dreams. In the painting mentioned in the poem, the woman is objectified in a way that she is always perfect in the painting and he leaves out her imperfections as she naturally is. The symbolism of the painting is of a perfect woman but that does not reflect how women truly were in the past. Women still had beautiful imperfections and how they may look naturally may reflect a part of their personality that a beautiful, flawless painting may not. The woman that the man is painting is idealized by this man as he sees her beauty and the kindness in her eyes that he hopes to reflect in his painting of her. However, this poem ...

Goblin Market

"Their offers should not charm us,  Their evil gifts would harm us.”  She thrust a dimpled finger  In each ear, shut eyes and ran:  Curious Laura chose to linger  Wondering at each merchant man. " "One may lead a horse to water,  Twenty cannot make him drink.  Though the goblins cuff’d and caught her,  Coax’d and fought her,  Bullied and besought her,  Scratch’d her, pinch’d her black as ink,  Kick’d and knock’d her,  Maul’d and mock’d her,  Lizzie utter’d not a word;  Would not open lip from lip  Lest they should cram a mouthful in" Word Count: 250      Overall, both of these quotes revolve around the allegory of the entire poem. Within the first quote, I believe that the hidden meaning is that of the temptation and desire women had during the time for men who would win them over with their charm. In the first quote, Laura is drawn in by the temptation of the offers of the goblins. However, Lizzie...

Lady Audley's Secret

Word count: 267 This movie was an intense romantic mystery that involved a lot of deceit as well as blackmail and murder. This movie appeared to be similar to History of the Nun in the aspect that it involved the theme of a woman going mad and acting in a irrational way in order to get what she wants and protect her identity. There are many scenes in which Lady Audley is blackmailed and must act deceitfully to try to maintain her new identity and not as the murderer of George. She also acts out to try and silence the blackmailers with a fire. Near the end of the movie, similar to History of the Nun, we see Lady Audley admit her backstory of living in poverty with a mother who also once went mad and also her crime of changing her identity after she faked her death and killed George. It is shocking throughout the movie what this woman is willing to say or do in order to attempt to maintain her honor as a Lady. But her past catches up with her and she eventually appears to go mad and...

Pride and Prejudice(last half)

Word count: 297   “From the very beginning—from the first moment, I may almost say—of my acquaintance with you, your manners, impressing me with the fullest belief of your arrogance, your conceit, and your selfish disdain of the feelings of others, were such as to form the groundwork of disapprobation on which succeeding events have built so immovable a dislike; and I had not known you a month before I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry.” This quote demonstrates a very angry but strong tone shown by Elizabeth about how she views Mr. Darcy. I very much like this quote as it shows a domineering side of Elizabeth to stand up for what she believes to Mr. Darcy. She is able to express her feelings very well about how she felt from the very start that he did not treat her with respect and only ever demonstrated arrogance in her presence. From Elizabeth's point of view, she expresses her feelings that she deserves better and would never...

Jane Austen Documentary

In the documentary, there is a comment that states that there is a big focus on reading, writing, music, and dancing during Jane's time period as well as in many of her novels. In many of her novels there are many encounters at balls such as in Pride and Prejudice. Surprisingly, Jane's family was in support of her writing as her father bought her a writing desk and she was actually shielded from doing house work potentially because she was not very good at it but also so she could focus on her writing. Women were not supported in their writing during Jane's time but since Jane had no income and her family was not very wealthy, they still supported her in doing what she loved. Jane's lack of wealth led to a man named Tom, that she cared for, refusing to marry her since she could not support his family which was further reflected in the theme of many of her novels that money came before love. There was an interesting fact noted in the documentary that Jane was given mone...

Pride and Prejudice

Word count: 285 " It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."(Chapter 1) This is a great quote that sets the tone for most of the rest of the reading. It is at the very beginning of the novel and does a great job of helping readers get a picture for the theme that was apparent during this time that men with fortune felt as though that led to the notion that they must then use that money to possess a wife. It is important to recognize the wording used in the quote that "men" with fortune must find a "wife" and not the other way around. However, with many of Jane Austen's writing, there is an underlying sense that everyone is seeking out fortune and wealth and during this time, that came down to marrying into wealth.  "'and I could easily forgive  his  pride, if he had not mortified  mine .'”(Chapter 5) This is a very good quote that shows the characterization of Eliz...

Fantomina

"...  that in spite of the Eagerness with which he first enjoy'd her, he was at last grown more weary of her, than he had been of  Fantomina ; which she perceiving, would not be troublesome..."(270) In this quote, there is a tone recognized that the Lady is upset by Beauplaisir growing tired of her other identity while yet a sense of confidence in her ability to continue fooling him with her new identity as Fantomina. It is surprising to read how Beauplaisir was so eager to have the Lady as her first identity mimicking that of a high class prostitute and how fast he got tired of her and moved on to a new woman unknowingly disguised as someone named Fantomina. It shows a lot about the Lady that she is fine to continue deceiving this man that she desires so much that does not care so much for who she is but only for her appearance and her willingness to give up her body to him with sex. She does not  respect herself enough to give up on a man who clearly does...

The Duchess

Word count:274  In the movie, The Duchess, there are many scenes that are horribly upsetting for anyone who is watching. One big theme recognized in the movie is that women are inferior to men and men have the power to do anything they want. One such scene in which this theme is very prominent is when the Duchess tries to make a deal with the Duke that he is allowed to continue on with Bess and the Duchess's blessing if the Duchess is allowed to be with Grey. The Duke then tells her that he can do whatever he wants but she is under his control and must give him a baby. He then proceeds to rape her as Bess listens. It is just absolutely appalling that women had to endure the awful control of men in this time period. Towards the end of the movie, the Duke has the Duchess under such a control that she is forced to give up a life of love with Grey in order to have a life with her children. However, she is still forced to give up the child that is Grey's and never tell him it is her...
