Writing Women's Lives
Word Count:252
In this documentary, we hear a lot of stories from women writers and some of the struggles they went through with how many hours they would spend writing and how hard it was for some of them to get their works published the way they were originally written. I focused on how a few of the women stated that their publishers would not approve of their writings and would ask if they could make their writings more focused on the elegance of their lives rather than the realism of the world they would attempt to write about. These women spoke about how they enjoyed writing with an energetic aesthetic and more of a risk with their works. Publishers even disapproved of these women writing about immigrant women as they did not want to spread this sense of cultural collision that was growing prominent. It is interesting to hear about how many of these women are realists and desire to write about what is really going on in the world and how they are being affected by it. Another interesting point made in the documentary was about how hard it really is to get some sort of writing published if you do not already have some sort of "in" to one of the big publishing networks as there are so few that are run by the same groups of people. Overall, it is amazing to see how many women desire to have their word representing their thoughts and feelings spread throughout the world.
I thought it was interesting for one author in particular she had first written a poem and was so excited about sharing it in school so she read it in the class and the teacher immediately thought she didn't write it. This gave us a more of an insight of the personal struggles of doubt that they had to overcome.
